Asia Beer Championship 2023 Wild Specialty Beer Category: Gold Award

Off Trail, a brand that challenges itself with innovative beer brewing, will begin selling Off Trail Kriek in the Barrel 2023, a collaboration with Culmination Brewing, a brewery in Portland, Oregon, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

■ The fourth installment of "Kriek in the Barrel" is gaining worldwide acclaim

"Kriek in the Barrel," a collaboration with Culmination Brewing, a brewery in Portland, Oregon, was first released in 2019 and won a bronze medal at the Asia Beer Championship 2019. Since then, the second release in 2021 won a gold medal at the Asia Beer Championship 2021 and a silver medal at the European Beer Star 2021, and the third release in 2022 won a gold medal at the Asia Beer Championship 2022 and a bronze medal at the International Beer Cup 2022. It has won medals at international competitions every time, and is a product that is gaining global acclaim.

We are pleased to announce the completion of our fourth brew, "Off Trail Kriek in the Barrel 2023." This year's release was scheduled for January, as usual, but due to the severe cold weather last winter, the fermentation tanks at our Genryu Brewery in Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, were unable to heat up, which delayed fermentation, resulting in a four-month delay in release.

■A fruity barrel-aged sour ale with even more depth and complexity.

"Kriek in the Barrel 2023" is a barrel-aged sour ale blended with a red ale that has undergone lactic acid fermentation via kettle souring, added Brettanomyces yeast, and aged for 12 months in oak barrels. This blend also includes a sour porter that has been aged for 22 months in red wine barrels. This barrel-aged sour ale features a base beer with greater depth and complexity than previous releases, and is infused with cherries.

Aromas of red wine vinegar, fresh red cherry, and rose are layered with a gentle cherry acidity and the funky leather flavor unique to barrel aging, finishing dry and fruity. The light-bodied yet fruity flavor is further enhanced by pairing with steak, mushrooms, or grilled chicken.

Kriek is a Belgian beer style, a fruit sour ale made by adding cherry to the naturally fermented lambic beer. "Kriek in the Barrel" is inspired by traditional Kriek, but is brewed with originality. Having gained international acclaim and become a signature product of the "Off Trail" brand, "Kriek in the Barrel" will continue to be released as a seasonal winter product.

"Off Trail Kriek in the Barrel 2023" will be available for purchase on the Far Yeast Brewing online store starting Tuesday, May 30th, and will then be available at restaurants and liquor stores nationwide.

[What is Off Trail?]

Launched in November 2019 as a follow-up to the two brands "KAGUA" and "Far Yeast," "Off Trail" is a brand that explores new possibilities in craft beer. Its name comes from the image of forging ahead on unpaved roads, setting itself apart from well-paved roads. The beer is brewed using the barrel-aging method, whereby beer is aged in barrels previously used for wine, sake, and whiskey, in order to develop rich and complex aromas by utilizing microorganisms other than brewer's yeast. The brand explores unique flavors by blending seasonal fruits such as grapes and peaches, as well as regional specialties, to match the characteristics of the base beer.
