■Ume plums are used from the village plum grove, which is difficult to maintain due to aging.

With a brewery in Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, we are strengthening our ties with producers and businesses in Yamanashi Prefecture and actively collaborating with them to brew beer using local produce. This latest brew is based on the theme of "Terroir Kosuge," and was brewed using plums from our local village of Kosuge. "Terroir" is a word derived from the French word for "land," and refers to the unique characteristics of a place, such as soil, climate, and topography.

The plum groves scattered throughout Kosuge Village are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to the aging of producers. As part of our efforts to address this local issue, since 2020 we have been helping with the plum harvest and manufacturing products using the plums. In 2020, we brewed "Ume-kin' Me Crazy!" and in 2021, "Off Trail Ume Kaiju." In addition to beer, we also released our first plum wine , "Off Trail - Azeotrope Koshu Wine Barrel Aged Plum Wine," in April of this year.

This year, marking the third year of this project, we once again received cooperation from Hiroki Aoyagi of boonboon Co., Ltd., a business owner from Kosuge Village who is working to restore, manage, and utilize the village's farmland. At the end of June, our brewery staff helped harvest the plums, carefully preparing each freshly picked plum before brewing beer.

■Punchy plum acidity and rich flavor

This latest release is a re-brew of "Ume-kin' Me Crazy!", originally made in 2020. The base beer has been slightly altered, with a strong ale aged in several different barrels. Inspired by a recipe for plum wine, the alcohol content and residual sugar content have been set slightly higher to bring out the rich aroma and flavor of the plums.

A generous 200kg of fresh, hand-picked plums, rich in citric acid, are used for every 1,000L of beer. The base beer is not sour, but the sourness of the plums is fully utilized, making this a unique sour ale. Citric acid is expected to help with fatigue recovery and mineral absorption, making it a great choice for the lingering heat of summer.

This unique fruit sour ale features punchy acidity, bursting fruit flavors, malty sweetness, and soft oak tannins.

[What is Off Trail?]

Launched in November 2019 as a follow-up to the two brands "KAGUA" and "Far Yeast," "Off Trail" is a brand that explores new possibilities in craft beer. Its name comes from the image of forging ahead on unpaved roads, setting itself apart from well-paved roads. The beer is brewed using the barrel-aging method, whereby beer is aged in barrels previously used for wine, sake, and whiskey, in order to develop rich and complex aromas by utilizing microorganisms other than brewer's yeast. The brand explores unique flavors by blending seasonal fruits such as grapes and peaches, as well as regional specialties, to match the characteristics of the base beer.
