Far Yeast Brewing has released "Far Yeast Omoiro Tomato Ale," made with Omoiro tomatoes from Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, as the fourth installment of the "Yamanashi Support Project," which aims to promote Yamanashi through beer. Pre-orders will begin on the online store from 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.
■The latest product of the Yamanashi Support Project is a vegetable ale made with tomatoes from Hokuto City
In October 2020, we relocated our headquarters from Shibuya to Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, where our brewery is located, to further deepen our ties with producers and businesses within the prefecture. The "Yamanashi Support Project," launched with the desire to revitalize local industry through brewing beer using products from the prefecture, began in July 2020, prior to the relocation.
The first product was "PEACH HAZE," made with peaches from Yamanashi City, the second was "Ume-kin' Me Crazy!", made with plums from Kosuge Village, where the company has its own factory, and the third was "GRAPEVINE," made with grapes from Nirasaki City. Together with the beer, the company has been promoting the charm of Yamanashi.
The fourth product in the series, "Far Yeast Omoiro Tomato Ale," is a beer made from "Omoiro Tomatoes" produced by Lycopel Co., Ltd., an agricultural production corporation located in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The juice from Omoiro tomatoes, which were nearing their expiration date and could no longer be sold on the market, was used to create the beer.
Utilizing tomato juice stockpiles generated during the COVID-19 pandemic , "Omoiro Tomato" is a proprietary brand from Lycopel, named after its similarity to the traditional Japanese color "Omoiro" (the color of thought) and its desire to produce delicious tomatoes. The area enjoys some of the highest sunshine hours in the country and the large temperature difference between day and night, which is unique to the high altitude, making it ideal for growing tomatoes, resulting in premium tomatoes with an exquisite balance of sweetness and acidity.
Lycopel processes these "Omoiro Tomatoes" and sells a rich, additive-free tomato juice that is free of water, salt, sugar, etc., which has been well-received. However, sales plummeted last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They had a stock of juice that was due to expire in June 2021. At that time, they came across our company through a connection between businesses in the prefecture, and after discussing the project, this collaboration was realized. "Far Yeast Omoiro Tomato Ale," the first vegetable-based beer in the Yamanashi Support Project, was born.
"Far Yeast Omoiro Tomato Ale" uses approximately 500 liters of "Omoiro Tomato Juice." The green, acidic, and umami flavor of the tomatoes is enhanced with celery, Citra hops, kelp, and basil, while the citrus-flavored coriander and various spices are added to create a deep, flavorful vegetable cocktail.
