Far Yeast Brewing Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Shiro Yamada), a craft beer maker that distributes original Japanese beers to the world, will begin selling its first in-house canned products, "Tokyo Blonde," "Tokyo White," and "Tokyo IPA," under the "Far Yeast" brand, nationwide from early April 2020.
In the Japanese craft beer industry, it is rare for canned products to be produced in-house, but we have installed a can filling line at our own factory, Genryu Brewery, in Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture. We are making a full-scale entry into the canned beer market and expanding our sales channels so that more people can try our products. As our first in-house canned beer, we will be selling canned products of three of our popular staples, "Tokyo Blonde," "Tokyo White," and "Tokyo IPA."

Because cans block light, they are able to maintain the quality of beer more stably than other materials, and as a result, countries such as the United States, which are leading the craft beer industry, are increasingly shifting from bottles to cans. Furthermore, aluminum cans are attracting attention for their environmental impact reduction, as the recycling rate in Japan exceeds 90% * and their lightweight and compact design allows for savings in energy required for transportation and storage capacity.
In a unique attempt, the company has also implemented in-container secondary fermentation, a process that is also used in existing products, in canned products. Like champagne, a small amount of yeast and sugar is added after primary fermentation is complete and before filling the can, allowing secondary fermentation to proceed inside the can. This creates a soft carbonation and rich flavor that is different from beer that has been artificially carbonated (the process of adding carbon dioxide to the liquid). In addition, because the oxygen remaining inside the can is consumed during the fermentation process, the risk of oxidation of the beer is reduced, allowing for long-term quality maintenance, resulting in a best-by date of 12 months.
The simple and stylish package design features the golden hue of beer for "Tokyo Blonde," the refreshing light blue for "Tokyo White," and the green of hops for "Tokyo IPA." The right-pointing arrow indicates the east, which is the direction of Tokyo from Europe, the center of beer culture , and the package also expresses "Tokyo," with its sophisticated quality and lively spirit that continues to evolve every day.
We will continue to create new value by promoting original Japanese beer to the world so that more customers can enjoy it.
*The aluminum can recycling rate in 2018 reached 93.6% (according to the Aluminum Can Recycling Association).
Photo shoot cooperation: The hotel that cooperated with us in this photo shoot was "NIPPONIA Kosuge Genryu no Mura," a traditional Japanese hotel in Kosuge Village, where our Genryu Brewery is located. This traditional Japanese hotel was renovated from the mansion of a local dignitary, over 150 years old, dating back to the end of the Edo period, and they also sell our beer.
